Taking Map Skills Outside!

Fall in Wisconsin!

HELLO!

Happy Fall!

Last week we began learning about how our community is related to our state and then to our country!  We have a beautiful USA map painted on our playground!  We went outside and talked about boundaries, oceans, and state sizes.  I had them jump to states according to clues I gave them!  For instance, I have four states that border me.  I touch the Pacific Ocean.  I am bigger than WI!   Many seemed more connected to the content and material I was teaching!  They also shared stories about states they visited or places they have relatives!

Clay, Sand, Humus, OH MY!

HELLO!

Today in our Soil Kit we investigated what happens when you add water to clay, sand, and humus?  Will the components of soil retain their shape or will they distance themselves?  Will they be able to hold together to form a ball and roll?  We discovered that clay was the only soil component that would roll into a ball.  We discussed why and talked about the particles of clay vs. the particles in humus and sand.  Next up, we try to streak clay, sand, and humus!

Making a Number Line

HAPPY WEDNESDAY-Pre 9/11-Patriotic Day!!!

Today our math program introduced working with and placing two digits on a number line.  This concept is very challenging when landmarks/decades of 10 are not given on the number line.  For example, if a number line 0-40 is given and one only has 0 and 40 noted, what would be half way or where should 19 go?  (etc.).  We discussed halving and using what we know about numbers on the number line to try to place numbers we don't know.  I also gave them a piece of yarn and 5 Post It Notes.  We started off by marking 0 and 100.  We then figured out were 50 was and then marked 25 and 75.  What was the advantage about using the string is we could fold it at the intervals.
